Skimming Properties of Weirs (Baddour 2020)
Weirs allow surface water to flow by gravity downstream. They are, therefore, by definition skimmers. The skimming properties of various type of weirs were investigated by Baddour (2020) who introduced the concept of the skimming function, which is defined as the discharge, q, over the weir per unit height.
Skimming properties of rectangular and triangular weirs are evaluated in the following with the skimming function given above.
Clearly, the results given above show that the triangular weir ( V-notch) is a superior skimmer when compared to the rectangular weir. The elevation of maximum skimming is much closer to the surface in the case of the triangular weir.
